A Summer Break…Edisto Isle, South Carolina…

Edisto Island is the last of the islands off the coast of South Carolina not yet commercialized and about an hour drive South of Charleston

The Drive in…8-22-2013 Edisto-Charleston 21415 - Version 2Edisto Island was developed by English and Barbadian colonists for large cotton and rice plantations in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with labor done by hundreds of enslaved Africans. They developed the creole Gullah language and culture on the islands and in the Low Country, distinctive for its African traditions.

Since the twentieth century, the island has been redeveloped for use as a tourist destination with about a dozen independent little restaurants, although some private plantations remain.8-22-2013 Edisto-Charleston 21128 - Version 2
